St John Ambulance Guernsey is appealing to local businesses and individuals to help support our Covid-19 response.

St John Ambulance Guernsey relies on donations and volunteers to operate, so we are currently asking for assistance either in terms of volunteers or financial help.

During this lockdown which started on 23rd January, the charity already seems to be much busier than last time.

St John is currently running the following services to support the community during this second wave of Covid:

Caring Caller – This scheme is to ensure those who are feeling vulnerable, isolated and lonely have someone to talk to. We have a group of volunteers who regularly call people just for a chat and to check in. Having a friendly voice at the end of the phone can really brighten someone’s day. We have picked up some quite sad cases where people have seemed to slip through the cracks even in a small community like ours, we are able to signpost people to other services which may improve their quality of life.

Grocery deliveries – As we did in the last lockdown we are collecting and delivering groceries for those with no other means to shop for themselves. They may be shielding or in isolation with no family/friends to help. Demand for this service has been high over the first week of lockdown.

Prescription deliveries – Again as we did in the last lockdown we are collecting and delivering prescriptions for those with no other means to get medications. This is a vital service which helps to ensure that people stay well and don’t put further strain on our healthcare services.

Vaccination transport – With the current guidelines many people are being told to isolate. Because of this we were getting calls from people who now have no way to get to their vaccination appointment. It is key to fighting this virus that we ensure people are vaccinated, especially the most vulnerable in our community.

Emergency ambulance decontamination – A team of trained volunteers is on call 24/7 to clean front-line ambulances. These volunteers who are provided with full PPE are key to enabling our emergency crews to get back out on the road and respond the next emergency.

Any financial assistance from local businesses will go a long way in allowing us to continue to support those who need us at the moment and ensure our volunteers do it in a way which keeps everyone as safe as possible, through the provision of training, support, PPE and supplies for infection control.
