On Wednesday 16th October St John Ambulance Guernsey is working with the Cardiac Action Group to provide free CPR and AED demonstrations for members of the public in the centre of St Peter Port.

The sessions will run from 1145 to 1330 in the Market Square and paramedics from the emergency ambulance service will be on hand to give advice and answer questions. Volunteers from St John and the Cardiac Action Group’s Community Resuscitation Development Officer will also be demonstrating this life-saving techniques. The short hands-on lessons will be run as a drop-in style event, so no booking is required.

Chief Ambulance Officer, Mark Mapp said: “Doing CPR and using an AED are simple but life-saving skills which we believe everyone in the community should learn. The St John Emergency Ambulance Service responds to an average of six cardiac arrests each month. A patient’s chances of surviving a cardiac arrest improve if there is early recognition, early CPR, early use of an AED and early advanced pre-hospital care from a paramedic.”

St John Ambulance Guernsey would like to thank Bailiwick Estates Limited and the St Peter Port Constables for supporting this event and giving permission for it to be held in the Market Square.

Restart A Heart Day is a worldwide charitable event which takes place on 16th October every year. An alliance of ambulance services, first aid providers, medical charities and cardiac health organisations from all over the world will be working together to increase public awareness of cardiac arrests and increase the number of people trained in life saving CPR.

Islanders also have the opportunity take part in free one hour sessions at Community Centres across the island throughout the week starting on Monday 14th October. These events have been organised by the Cardiac Action Group and supported by St John Ambulance Guernsey. To book a place on one of these events call 07781129539 or email info@cag.org.gg
