St John Ambulance Guernsey runs a non-emergency Patient Transfer Service which transports patients to and from hospital for medical appointments when they are unable to travel by other means.

Nicky Strong and Alan Prevel both work part-time for the Patient Transfer Service (PTS).

Nicky who previously worked as an Account Sales Manager for a Media Company, says she joined St John because she wanted a role where she felt she could be a real benefit and value to the local community.

She said: “Although we meet some of the same patients each week, I love the fact that no two days are the same. It can be very rewarding building up relationships with the patients and knowing that you are a lifeline for them.  Sometimes we might be the only person they see for days.”

Away from work Nicky enjoys spending time with her family and friends and playing badminton and table tennis.

Alan used to work as a Prison Officer and spent 27 years with the Prison Service. For 10 of those years he led the anti-suicide and self-harm team. Like Nicky, Alan wanted a new challenge which still involved helping people.

“I like the fact that I am out and about with patients all day. It is also nice to get to know the people we pick up regularly for routine appointments,” he said.

When he’s not working Alan enjoying racing his single-seater racing car at the hill climb. He says not working on bank holidays and weekends makes it much easier to enjoy his hobby.
