We are inviting islanders to find out about the many volunteer roles within the organisation at an Open Day on 1 November. To give you an idea of what its like to be part of our hardworking team, read about the experience of our volunteer Sarah Staples.

Sarah joined St John this year as an Event First Aider.

Sarah said: “My role entails attending meetings at the St John training hall on a weekly basis. I also go along to training weekends to extend my knowledge of first aid.

My children have all grown up and after having attended St John Ambulance Training Service’s First Aid at Work course I thought the best way to keep on top of my training would be to volunteer as a first aider in my spare time.   It was also a great opportunity to meet new people whilst helping the community.

I only joined St John this year but I have enjoyed it so much that I’ve recently signed up with the ambulance reserve team, who meet every other week.

First aid is a very important skill and I think that everyone should know at least the basics.

As an event first aider, I volunteer at a lot of different events such as the West Show, the Guernsey Marathon and show jumping.  Everyone I’ve met during my time as a volunteer have been really lovely and are very thankful for the service that St John provides.

We all have different skills but pull together and work as a team. I hope I can continue learning and helping at St John for many years to come.

I feel extremely proud to wear the St John uniform and love helping others.”
