Will Waller has recently started working as an Ambulance Care Assistant with our Non-Emergency Patient Transfer Service.

Will is no stranger to St John, before being appointed to the role he was a volunteer first aider with St John Ambulance Guernsey and also volunteered during the Covid-19 pandemic. Will has also recently completed his training to become a volunteer Community First Responder.

Before joining the patient transfer service Will studied Public Services at the Guernsey College of Further Education and worked part-time in a pharmacy.

Will said: “I wanted to join the Non-Emergency Patient Transfer Service after volunteering as an ambulance care assistant. The job provides me the opportunity to do something good within the community, it gives me a different set of challenges each day, as well as the opportunity to meet a whole range of people you would otherwise never get to meet.  You also get to know your regular patients and this enables you to make a meaningful impact on their life.”

During his training Will learnt how to use a range of equipment, such as wheelchairs and stretchers. He has developed communications skills, learning how to communicate with different people with different conditions and has learnt how to overcome communication barriers. Other training has included driving and manoeuvring ambulances and how to use the radio system.

Will also volunteered to help the Emergency Ambulance Service during both Covid lockdowns.

Will said “The thing I’m most looking forward to is being able to begin a new career within the ambulance service where every day is different and will present new and ever-changing challenges.

“The best part of the job so far has been knowing that I’ve helped someone. It is so rewarding knowing that you’ve managed to help a person that is unwell to feel even a little better by getting them safely to hospital or home safely and ensuing that they have everything that they need.”

Away from work Will’s hobbies and interest include fishing and motorbikes. He is the proud owner of 2015 Tracer 900 which he plans to take away touring as soon as he is able to.
