We were delighted and honoured to welcome the Prior (Executive Chair) of England and the Islands of the Most Venerable Order of St John of Jerusalem and Chair of St John Ambulance to Guernsey this week.

Surgeon Rear Admiral Lionel Jarvis CBE DL KStJ, former Honorary Surgeon to Her Majesty the Queen and former Commanding Officer of the Royal Hospital Haslar, was given a tour of the St John Guernsey headquarters on the Rohais where he meet volunteers, staff and members of the youth sections.

Dr Jarvis was accompanied by the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of St John, Mr Martin Houghton-Brown. During the visit the pair learnt more about how St John operates within the Bailiwick and the services St John offers within the community.

The visit was hosted by the Knight Commander of St John Guernsey, Mr Andrew Henton, who also introduced the visitors to Commandery trustees and members of the board and the Chief Officer of the St John Emergency Ambulance Service.

Dr Jarvis, who has previous worked as a locum at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital in Guernsey in the 1990s said he had learnt a lot during his visit. “It is a highly professional team and they are undertaking some very interesting innovative practices which we will be taking back to England. The sales and supplied department in here is very interesting. I think that is a great asset for Guernsey”

“I have loved every minute of my visit. Everything I’ve seen makes me go back glowing with pride at the quality of the service that is available here”.

Andrew Henton, said “It is a real privilege to have the Prior and Chief Executive Officer visiting us in Guernsey. Although as a Commandery we are self-governing, St John Guernsey still maintains a very close connection with the Priory of England, so this visit will give us a chance to develop those relationships.”
