THE Commandery of St John has appointed Andrew Henton as Knight Commander for the Bailiwick at a formal investiture ceremony held in London.

Mr Henton has been a director of the Commandery in Guernsey since 2012 and takes on this titular figurehead from Nik van Leuven who retired last year. The service took place at the centuries-old Priory of St John in Clerkenwell, London in April.

The full title is Knight Commander for the Commandery of St John in the Bailiwick and reflects that St John is a Royal Order of Chivalry with all members appointed at the discretion of Her Majesty the Queen. The position is similar to that of a non-executive Chairman and Mr Henton’s appointment followed a formal nominations and interview process.

The role of Knight Commander involves representing St John at official events in the Bailiwick and chairing the board of directors, which sets the strategic direction for the Order in Guernsey. The board is also responsible for oversight of the various activities carried out by different parts of St John. The Knight Commander is also invited to Chapter meetings of the Order in the UK, and represents Guernsey in that forum.

Commenting on his investiture, Mr Henton said he was delighted to become Knight Commander as the role brought honour along with responsibility.

‘St John is an international organisation with its roots steeped in history. We very much consider ourselves to be part of the fabric here in Guernsey and believe that we provide a valuable range of services to our community. I represent many professionals and volunteers at St John and am acutely aware of the responsibility that brings.’

The ceremony involved Mr Henton being presented to the Prior of the Order, being invested by him with the insignia of the Knight Commander and followed by his swearing allegiance to the Sovereign, Prior and Order of St John.
