Our first aid volunteers were on hand across the community on Saturday 9th May as islanders gathered to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the island’s Liberation from German occupying forces.
St John volunteers and staff patrolled the town and harbour areas, responding to a number of casualties throughout the day.
Our first aid tent was in position on the quay near the Liberation Monument for the celebrations, supported by our ambulance crew and paramedics on an electric buggy.
Our most senior paramedic, Graham Le Maitre who is a very experienced cyclist, used his specially adapted paramedic bike to get through the crowds easily, providing a rapid response to emergency calls.
St John volunteers also provided first aid cover at the Liberation Church Service at Footes Lane which was attended by HRH The Countess of Wessex as well as other local dignitaries and islanders who lived through the occupation years. Here emergency medical technicians Paul Philips and Dean Robilliard acted as Standard Bearers and they also took part in the afternoon’s parade leading the Cavalcade.
St John volunteers give their time to serve the community at most of the large public events in the Bailiwick of Guernsey each year. We would like to particularly thank them for their hard work and support over this Liberation Day weekend.
