Twelve volunteers from St John Guernsey will be travelling to Gibraltar in July to help provide medical cover for the 2019 Natwest Island Games.

The team of first aiders will work alongside volunteers from St John Gibraltar and other organisations at venues across the famous rock between 6th and 12th July. The Gibraltar Island Games will see more than two thousand two hundred athletes competing in almost two hundred different events in fourteen sports. Thousands of spectators are also expected to watch the action.

A group which is made up of experienced First Aiders and Advanced First Aiders have been undertaking extra training in preparation for the games.

Attending the Gibraltar event this year and experiencing what the Island Games has to offer will also be an important part of the preparation for St John Ambulance Guernsey when it comes to planning and providing medical cover when the games come to Guernsey for the third time in 2021.

Chief Operating Officer, Nikki Harrison said “We are very excited to have the opportunity to be part of the 2019 Island Games. We were delighted to be invited to support our colleagues in Gibraltar. It will be a great experience for everyone involved.

“Some of the volunteers who will be travelling to Gibraltar were first aiders in Guernsey for the games in 2003, so they have some idea of what to expect, but for the rest of our team it will be a valuable development opportunity. We are in the early stages of planning for the 2021, so I am also looking forward to finding out more about the logistics and learning from the Gibraltar experience.”
