Congratulations to our three recently qualified Emergency Medical Technicians.

Brad Stuckey, Kadie Ormrod and Marcia Bale all successfully completed their training, on the road assessments and passed their FREUC exams shortly before the start of the coronavirus pandemic. They have been fully operational as EMTs throughout the crisis responding to a variety of medical emergencies.

Kadie and Marcia both came from healthcare backgrounds, while Brad was an apprentice plumber before he joined St John’s Patient Transfer Service. All three worked as Emergency Care Assistants before training to become Emergency Medical Technicians.

Kadie is liking the challenge of her new role “I’ve always enjoyed the variety of my job. You never know what your day is going to be like and it is never boring. As EMTs we are having to take use our own clinical judgement much more and take more responsibility for our clinical decisions.”

Brad who used to volunteer as a St John first aider added: “This is my dream job. It is something I’ve wanted to do for a very long time. I love being able to help people and being part of great team”.

The trio generally work as part of a double crewed ambulance responding to 999 calls. Marica said: “It’s a job where you get to meet new people every day. Everyday brings new challenges, but I love the fact I can make a positive impact on the lives of patients. Although we’ve qualified we don’t stop learning and now we are all able to work with different colleagues we can share knowledge and experience.”

The training took place on island and was led by a tutor from the UK. A colleague from the States of Jersey Ambulance Service was also on the course with the three Guernsey students.
