Trainee EMT returns from Jersey

Former radio presenter Jim Cathcart had a career change last year and after more than twenty years in broadcasting, left the BBC to join the St John Emergency Ambulance Service in Guernsey. Jim has now completed his Emergency Medical Technician Training in Jersey and has resumed operational duties as a Trainee EMT with ‘A’ Team at SJEAS.

Jim spent four months working as an Emergency Care Assistant and underwent some initial training with Guernsey’s Paramedic Tutor Graham Le Maitre before going away to Jersey for training with a UK trainer and two new recruits from the States of Jersey Ambulance Service.

The course included anatomy and physiology, systems of the human body, patient assessment, trauma management, diseases, disorders & medical conditions, resuscitation, maternity and elderly care, safe administration of medicines and pre-hospital emergency care. During his time in Jersey Jim also spent two days on shift with Jersey paramedics responding to emergencies there.

Having completed the classroom based learning and assessments Trainee EMTs have to complete 750 hours workplace activity, working alongside Paramedics and qualified EMTs.
