Tributes have been paid to long serving St John member Peter Williams who died at the beginning of April.

Peter joined St John in 1959 and held a number of roles during his association with the charity. He was later appointed as a Serving Brother in recognition of outstanding achievement, the successful discharge of responsibility and selfless service in furthering the objects of the Order.

Jurat David Hodgetts Chairman of St John Guernsey said “‘Peter played an important part in the life of St John in Guernsey over many years and his contribution is greatly appreciated. He is remembered with fondness and our thoughts are with his family”

Many people will remember Peter as the Bailiwick Training Officer and Training Manager. He was at the forefront of what is now St John Training. Peter was ever present at the Charybdis parade and Remembrance Sunday parade. He was also a keen participant in the St John pantos.

St John Operations Assistant and long time friend Phil Ozanne said “Peter was a fairly quiet and unassuming kind of guy, but he had a wicked sense of humour and when St John used to put on pantomimes, we as performers were kept on our toes as we never knew what was going to happen “unscripted” I remember a massive spider being dangled from the scenery during Goldilocks – and the Guernsey flag being pulled out of a barrel revealing a massive pair of bloomers attached to the end”

Phil added “There were many occasions when we used to sit in what was the old Commissioners Hut discussing training, techniques and general St John chit chat. I learnt a great deal from him.”

St John Emergency Ambulance Service Senior Officer said “Peter was a St John stalwart. I remember him leading the parades on St John day, something he did with great pride. He was a fantastic trainer and as a cadet I remember him being very active and encouraging during the first aid competitions we took part in.”

Tribute have also been posted on the St John Guernsey Facebook page. Paul Dempsey wrote “I will always remember the early days down the Gigand where you trained me. RIP Peter.”

Lynette Mahy added “A fantastic bloke who did so much for so many.“

Trish de Carteret said “I spent a lot of time with Peter as a youngster he was great fun. Many great memories. Rest in peace and love to Sue and the family. X”.

Alan J Stevens posted “always been a great bloke and someone to talk to if needed. Good sense of humour and the ability of teaching first aid and subjects. RIP Pete.”

Tia Farrell wrote “RIP Peter it was a pleasure Serving with you.” 

On the day of his funeral the St John flag was flown at half mast as a mark of respect. Several St John members past and present attending his funeral at the Capelles Church.

Peter will be remembered by all who knew him and served with him. Our thoughts are with Peter’s wife Sue and his children Libby, Catherine, James and Alex.
