Coronavirus: Community support update

The Chief Operating Officer of St John Ambulance Guernsey, Nikki Harrison, has given an update on the community response to the coronavirus pandemic and thanked volunteers and the public for their support.

“I just wanted to say a massive thank you for the support the community has given St John Ambulance Guernsey through the Covid-19 outbreak. We have been absolutely overwhelmed with the offers of help and support.

We just wanted to give an update you on what we are currently doing at St John.

This week we have reached just over 200 names on our volunteer database which is incredible in just over a week! We are working with other charities, businesses and the States of Guernsey to ensure everyone has the volunteer support they need so they can keep delivering the essential services they offer.

Caring Caller – We have set up this service to help those who are feeling lonely or isolated and could do with a chat. We have a pool of volunteers ready to call round when we get a referral from either the individual, family or friends or healthcare professionals. We currently have some volunteers making regular calls and the feedback we have had has been fantastic! If you know someone who would benefit from this service please email caring.caller@stjohn.gg  or call 720088.

Deliveries – We have been taking calls from members of the public for help collecting mainly groceries and prescriptions. The amount of these calls is increasing daily. Again, if you know someone who needs this service, call us on 742147.

Community support – We have been assisting with some requests for general help in the community, this has been anything from help getting a washing machine fitted to providing supper to residents in one of the Care Homes.

Hand sanitiser – Thankfully the Channel Island Seaweed hand sanitiser was given the go ahead, so we have started distributing this to the community. Since Saturday we have delivered nearly 400 litres. Thank you so much everyone who has helped get it out to those who need it.

Ambulance support – We have been supporting our fantastic emergency ambulance service by setting up cleaning teams, these teams can be called in day or night to help clean vehicles so the crews can get straight back out on the road. I know the crews are extremely grateful for the help and support.

Finally, I would just like to give a huge thank you to all the volunteers who have come forward and are supporting the community, without you the above services would not be possible.”
