What’s involved
This enables first aiders and paramedics on duty at big public events across Guernsey to cover large crowded areas promptly and independently to reach patients quickly, starting life-saving treatment whilst an ambulance is on its way.
The highly visible customised mountain bikes are equipped with specially designed pannier bags which carry a defibrillator, oxygen, diagnostic equipment, wound dressings and other medical consumables.
The CRU is made up of a team of volunteer St John first aiders and advanced first aiders who undertake additional training as well as communication, navigation and fitness tests.
The bikes were initially funded by G4S Channel Islands, which included the customised mountain bikes and medical equipment, specialist clothing and training.

The use of cycle responders in the UK has seen an improvement in survival rates from cardiac arrests, as the units can reach the scene of an incident very quickly and deliver lifesaving care to patients. We believe this kind of service is ideal for Guernsey and the units will now become a common sight at events and shows, particularly during the busy summer months.
