Meet Alan – Maintenance Engineer at St John HealthCare

Alan Armstrong has just celebrated his first year working for St John HealthCare.

As Maintenance Engineer he is responsible for installing and maintaining equipment in private houses and residential homes around the island.

Alan describes himself as a people person and says there’s lots of variety in his job. “Every day is different, which is good. The variety is brilliant. I could spend the whole day working at a nursing home servicing beds, hoists and wheelchairs. Others days I could be going from house to house and then if an emergency breakdown comes in I could be called off to deal with that.”

St John HealthCare is the official Stannah Stairlifts stockist for the Channel Islands and Alan has been trained by the company to install and service the equipment. “I went away to Andover on a three week course which covered every aspect of stairlifts from surveying a property, checking the staircases are suitable, installing the equipment and then maintaining, fault finding and repairs”.

Alan is currently working towards gaining his Stannah certificate of excellence, but is already a bit of an expert. “There are basically two types of stairlifts,” he explained, “A straight stairlift from bottom to top, or a curved one which goes onto a landing or round a bend, sometimes over several flights. Everyone is different, but on average it takes 5-6 hours to fit”. He also recently travelled to Alderney to helped install a Stannah Stairlift there.

“It’s nice walking away at the end of a job knowing you’ve made a difference. Even though mobility can be a problem for some people, so often they don’t want to have to move house, but by installing a stairlift we can give them their home back. I do like helping people and it’s a nice rewarding feeling.”

Alan drives one of our two HealthCare vehicles and operates as a mobile workshop, but when he’s not on the road he works out of the workshop at the Rohais.

Before joining St John HealthCare in 2017 Alan said he knew St John ran the emergency ambulance service and had a voluntary section, but admits he didn’t know much about St John HealthCare or the shop.

Alan who is originally from the UK has a background as a builder and HGV driver. When he’s not at work he enjoys helping his partner with her horses, cliff walks and kayaking.
